Daniel Uche Nworie, an ex-campus /freelance journalist who recently graduated from Lagos State University has won this year 2024 2nd place award under the Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability category of The National Center on Disability and Journalism

The Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability under which Daniel won 2nd place for student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability honours the advocacy of the late Gary Corcoran, a wheelchair user from the age of 19 who worked to improve accessibility of housing, transit and public venues across Phoenix.
Announcing the award yesterday, March 31, 2025, the body says “Award and Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability, recognizing outstanding reporting that illuminates the stories of disabled individuals worldwide””
About Daniel Nworie and his journey towards journalism award
About Daniel Nworie was 2023/2024 President of National Association of Campus Journalism, Lagos State University Chapter, he had benefited extremely from coaching and mentoring from Nigeria Grassroot news and Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP)
NGNews and Afymp has had several interactions with members of the ACJ, LASU through Daniel Nworie’s invitation. One major shift in Daniels journey was his being selected as one of the fellows of AFYMP’s Campus Journalism, Ethics, fact checking and data-driven fellowship in 2024. The media fellowship exposed him to the fundamentals of ethical investigative storytelling, pitching among many others aside from mentoring from the faculty members of the fellowship.

Daniel said “I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of Nigeria Grassroot News /AFYMP 2024 Campus Journalism Fellows and all the guidance, mentoring that gave me this edge”.
In his message to Daniel Nworie Yinka Olaito, the Managing editor of the Nigeria Grassroot News and Executive Directorr of AFYMP, congratulated him and charged him to always strive for gold. According to Yinka Olaito “We as a team is so proud of you. While we acknowledged this as a testament to our contribution to African Journalism’s excellence, we charged you to continue to strive for greater excellence”.

While training the campus journalism outlet led by Daniel, Part of the topics covered was community journalism which bothers on the voices of the under-reported. This ignited his passion to write the story that worn him this global award
At the AFYMP annual Africa Come Alive Forum for excellent fellows, Daniel Nworie also won 1st runner up award category for Best Campus Journalism Fellow 2024
What the Corcoran award entails
Coming second place in the award category, Daniel aside from opportunity to share his experience at this year global celebration marking the event will also be rewarded with On Thousand Five Hundred US Dollars ($1.500=) which is equivalent to Two Million, Two hundred and fifty Thousand (N2,250.000.00=) Nigeria Naira only.
Winners are invited to discuss their work on April 17 in the First Amendment Forum at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in downtown Phoenix USA. The event, which is open to the public, also will be live streamed.
The National Center on Disability and Journalism (NCDJ)The Schneider and Corcoran awards are both administered by the NCDJ, which is part of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. The NCDJ offers resources and materials for journalists covering disability issues and topics, including a widely used disability language stylebook.
