In this special report, Inioluwa Popoola, a journalist with TVC and fellow of Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals’ Women in Journalism Fellowship 2023 shared this report about Toma Unu, a. 39-year-old lady who is a Person with Disability(PWD)
Toma unu, has cerebral palsy – a neurological disorder that disrupts the brain’s ability to control movement and maintain posture and balance. Statistics from World report shows that nearly 1 to 4 children out of every 1000 live births have been identified with cerebral palsy. Though, she has hands, but the hands can’t be used for anything – someone has to assist her to take and make phone calls and carry objects. But interestingly, what her hands cannot do, her legs do better.
Toma e has learnt how to paint, make herself up and even feed herself all, with her legs. Tona also has the support of her immediate family member, which is important to her. But Tona says more strategic support from the government would further equip her situation better.
